The Confessions of a Whore

He’s unassuming. 5’11 he says, and mostly silent. He wears a fitted cap, a white v-neck tee, blue jeans and a pair of Adidas slippers. The awkward silence that hangs heavily is punctuated by the angry raindrops. There is nothing about his outward appearance that could possibly betray the tale he had come to tell Shanice* and I, he is a male whore.

When she told me she knew a guy that sold his body, I laughed. My response was, so what? All girls do, at least informally. Yes ladies, when men sleep with you and then you get your favourite pair of shoes or you get that little “allowance”; he’s saying “job well done, get yourself something nice.” (The only thing left for him to do is throw a dollar bill at you.) That makes you a prostitute in everything but name. Try a little independence. After all, the sex is payment enough.

But I digress.

I decided I wouldn’t speak during this “interview”, I’d allow Shanice to ask the questions, he was after all, her friend. I’d simply listen and record his version of events. The story began in high school. He says he made the Manning Cup team because “yow, mi love ball game enuh but nuh funds neva a run.” In fact, I got the distinct impression he joined the team so that he would benefit from the free lunch afforded to the footballers. He was merely 16 years old and wanted to go to the bar-b-que; he says he didn’t have the “funds” and his mother is “wukliss” – I understood this to mean she either couldn’t, or refused to give him the money he needed. What he said next stunned me.

“Pawdie, di likkle gyal bwoy dem ave money enuh. And caw mi waan roll a di BBQ, mi just mek dem feel like we deh.”

Basically, he had become an escort for these rich boys, his peers. He maintains he did not have sex with any of them and he says we should understand that he’s straight. I struggled not to speak. I had several questions. Chief among them, why didn’t you just stay home? Why betray your dignity just to attend a BBQ? But I held my tongue. I remained silent as he continued.

In my mind I directly attributed it to the society’s failure. That is, the culture of greed and quick gains we have cultivated. I believe this very culture creates some of the most impossible evils we face as a country. Gunmen, thieves, coke dealers. The works. Some of these youngsters take up weapons in furtherance of gaining a quick dollar, the long and hard road to success is no longer appealing. It was the same situation with Kevin*, he couldn’t sit still and wait until he could legitimately afford to attend the BBQ, he chose to sell his dignity.

By now the story had reached him having full blown sex with cougars. This he says, is the best. “Yow, dem spwile mi & all mi affi do a f@%k it erryday.” I didn’t even bother to ponder where these old women get the sex drive to have sex with a youngster everyday. He tells us that most, if not all of them were married. One in particular had a son his age, a son he became friends with. This caused me to wonder if the drive for the money had erased his conscience. I mean, gentlemen, how many of you could have sex with your friend’s mother, for money, and not even be remotely affected by it? And I want an honest answer, no “your momma” jokes. 😐

He next told of how he makes the “links” with these cougars. Apparently, if he sleeps with one and she enjoys it, she shares it with her peers; and he’s recommended to them. These include Bank Managers, Marketing Directors, CEO’s etc etc. A council of cougars, if you will. This is an opportune time to address the double standard in our society. If an older man takes to a younger girl, he’s condemned.

Yet we celebrate the younger guy older woman dynamic. This again is a fault of our society. We have taught our males that masculinity is defined by excessive sex and womanizing. We do not maintain a standard that tells our boys that just as it is to be frowned upon if a young girl dates an older guy, the same ought to obtain for the other way around. This obviously doesn’t happen. In fact, he claims his mother endorses his escapades with these older women, and his friends “big him up”. A glaring double standard.

Unable to keep quiet any longer, I blurted out “so how much do they pay you?” A sly smile plays across his face and he responds, “me decide dat and more while mi just tek wha mi waan.” I let this hang in the air for a minute. I briefly entertained the thought of getting a cougar. (I’m still thinking about it). 😐

Unfortunately, I had to leave before his tale was complete (blame Hazel) but as I left I wondered :

(1) Is there anything really wrong with what he’s doing? He technically isn’t breaking the law.

(2) His actions are consensual, is it really anybody’s business or place to condemn him?

(3) Is it that he really couldn’t do better? Or did greed and impatience force him to selling his body?

As I rose to leave, he did the thumb thing (you know the one where you flick thumbs?) Yeah, that. I briefly wondered when last those fingers and hand had been in an old woman’s vagina.

The rains continued to punctuate the silence.
