Demons & Sparta : The Tommy Lee Curse

Image

I believe art is one of the most powerful forms of communication, mobilisation and ultimately, indoctrination. I’ve always been mindful of the influence of music, particularly dancehall music, on the young and impressionable minds of our society. Those who have been following my blog for some time now would know my personal objection to “The Gaza Empire” and most, if not everything it produces. The latest “talent” the Portmore based empire has produced is the now infamous Tommy Lee. Since the incarceration of their god, Kartel, on murder charges the fans of Gaza have consistently repeated the refrain “Free Werl’ Boss”. When it became evident that the wheels of justice would turn desperately slow for the self styled “Werl Boss”, his fans craved a saviour for dancehall, a rebound figure to continue the influence and impact of the Gaza, that task fell to Tommy Lee. His methods have proven even more controversial than those of his boss. Of all the themes available, why choose a demonic one? And is that really “art”?

My first thought was that perhaps Tommy Lee chose to focus on demons for the shock value it added to his music, audiences everywhere would be “shook” by the demonic theme. Uncomfortable as it is for me to admit, the idea of demons and the devil is always a fascinating subject, particularly in a superstitious culture such as Jamaica. I don’t think anyone has ever really explored the goth culture in Jamaican music, so his approach is certainly novel, and it appeals to our culture because of our heavy “duppy” leanings. I suppose that is all well and good, controversial entertainment usually sells faster. If it’s true that sex sells in the United States, then it’s definitely true that violence and deviance sells in Jamaica.

The problem I have, which is the problem I had with Kartel, is the absolute abdication of responsibility for the content of the music produced and sold. While having a conversation with a Gaza fan, he pointed out that Tommy Lee’s music is not aimed at minors, or even teenagers, but towards adults. I don’t know if that’s true, in fact I flatly disagree. I believe the fan base of the Gaza is comprised mainly of teenagers, and the deviant message is geared towards them. As a society we will have to guard against the influence of any force which promotes negative behaviours disguised as adult entertainment so as not to bear the burden of responsibility for the impressionable minds that are exposed to their “art”. His fans are quick to hide behind the argument that parents need to step in and ensure their children are raised properly, it isn’t that simple. Parenting is now an exceedingly difficult task, further compounded and complicated by the widespread access to information and content of all kinds, both violent and sexual, which are available to children. A parent can only do so much and no more. The society at large which aids in the child’s socialisation must step in at some point and guard against perceived harms. Tommy Lee’s music is one such harm.

Image

This demonic theme is dangerous. As a friend of mine pointed out, Tommy Lee’s young fans may end up being a part of something he himself isn’t a part of. They may be led into something far more sinister, something far more real. The reality is that many of these children, some as young as seven years old, based on what I’m being told, are re-enacting Tommy Lee’s music videos and the themes in his music : demonic possession and murder. These impressionable minds aren’t always able to distinguish between whether the music is purely for entertainment, or whether Tommy Lee may really support and/or worship demons. It is a very dangerous gamble to take. I did a bit of research on the connection between murder, sadism, sexual cannibalism and demonic music. I found that some of the most notorious serial killers in history admitted to having extensive exposure to “demonic music” and violent themes in music, from Ted Bundy, who murdered countless women, right down to Ronald Defeo, who murdered his entire family as they slept; they all claimed some kind of demonic influence. Defeo actually claimed to hear voices from the radio, telling him to murder his family. His exposure to music with demonic themes was extensive and sustained, much like our children’s exposure to Tommy Lee’s music.

I was blasted for not taking into account the fact that the fault may not be with Tommy Lee, but rather with our society. A Caribbean Studies teacher pointed to the fact that we are a violent and murderous people, and if that inclination didn’t already exist within us, Tommy Lee would have nothing to play on. The teacher concludes that we are drawn to the demonic and murderous message because ultimately it speaks for us, at the end of the day, we all want to play villain. Is that true?

In the final analysis, Tommy Lee may prove far more harmful and destructive than the “Werl’ Boss”. Tommy Lee’s influence encourages murder, it encourages the ‘worship’ and endorsement of demons. This is harmful, and I can think of no way it qualifies properly as entertainment. I repeat, his music and the influence is dangerous. I perhaps should wrap this up now, lest he sends one of his demon gyal dem from Sparta fi suck off mi cocky and murda mi, or worse – set duppy pan mi. That would certainly leave me SHOOK. 😐

  1. I’m living in the US and not familiar with Tommy Lee or his music, but I’ve been hearing about him via social media. What I don’t understand is why he would want to entertain that kind of entity or bring that kind of energy into his life – even for entertainment purposes. We nuh play wid duppy business. He needs to beware, because when you play with fire, you will get burnt.

I went to a party last weekend. This party was hosted by some teenagers the oldest being 17 and the youngest 13. For every photograph that was taken at that party each, individual there, stopped, did the “signature” tommy lee pose (the one where they do the Gaza sign in front of their faces). This was repeated time and time again for each picture taken. because it’s the In thing

He can’t rightly say that is music his for a target demography. Total and utter bullshit. We all have seen the pull of Dancehall. the mindless “sheep” like behavior by the masses.

I’m atheist and his music scares me. makes me want to read The bible and quran and the bhagavad gita at once. *shankle dips*

Only the hardest of hardcore “Gaza” fans like his music. If you do like his music and are entertained, if their was a god. Let it be with you.

  4. I completely agree with you on this one. But it says nothing new, We’ve been talking about the affects of these music on society and on young people for so long, whether it’s the extremely violent description of murders or the raucous tales of their hardcore sex, or insinuating their devotion to the dark arts (I’ve been reading harry potter :D). We need to work on how to get them to stop, since ‘protecting the youth’ is not good enough.

  5. oh no the young are dieing and we must save them from the american movies and white girl pornography and the politicians and the sexism and the rampant lack of morals and values in our society and the constant bombardment of ads on television to buy this or buy that and the banks and big business that suck poor people dry and enslave us into buying ads and digital content that is rented. BMWs and mecedes benzes. Poor math and english scores, hyper materialism, americanism, politcs, crime, selfishness, incest, yogurt, homosexuals and our money driven society.

In fact I fine his music rather stupid, even if it does catch on wide spread I doubt it will last very long. Dancehall will live on and teen will grow up – at least 47 % of them.

  7. I find the Caribbean Studies teacher’s opinion incomplete and not very thought through. She or he also seems to be providing a sort of justification instead of an explanation for this artistic expression; the two are not the same and the former is a bit…irresponsible (?). And yes, I do classify what Tommy Lee does as art…despite how much, frankly, it scares me. Even if Jamaican society is murderous and violent – sufficient evidence exists to indicate that it is – bopping along to music that advocates murder, mayhem, and demonic possession and its associated things is another thing all together. So Tommy Lee is “merely” reflecting a segment of society but when one dismisses the danger of his expressions, as seems to have been done by that professor, I wonder what effect that will have on wider society? That music with its catchy beat that wants to grab your waistline, makes something that society does need to address far too warm and fuzzy, and perhaps ultimately, acceptable. I don’t think that folks should get their morals from music but the effect that music of all sorts has on one’s behaviour is undeniable and shouldn’t be ignored.

I mean I watched the first video (for Gaza Man crazy or some such title), which was well-shot by the way, and felt myself reflexively and automatically tense up throughout the entire thing…since then I’ve caught bits of his music in other ways and get chills. Can’t explain why but his stuff makes me want to pray and read a Bible verse. I feel the need to be cleansed…and I’m realizing that it’s not just me or even the author of this post.

Of course I’m not advocating any sort of state sanctioned censorship of this music but you’re right: it’s important for folks to be wary of what they let into their lives and the sort of thing that is being promoted in Tommy Lee’s music is definitely something to be wary of. I love Dancehall cyaan done but this manifestation of “Goth Dancehall” is really not to be taken lightly.

    September 1, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    • Thanks for your comment. Valid points raised. I believe at some point state sponsored censorship is desireable. When a situation is crying out for intervention, as a society we will have to intervene, and if it has to be the state, so be it.

Tommy Lee is doing what he thinks is novel in order to achieve social n material success. whether or not he truly believes in his proclamations is irrelevant. we disagree with his music because of our idea that artist must accept social responsibility and obviously he doesn’t so even if it takes a village to raise a child Tommy Lee is not apart of the village.

  9. Word sound power. It is scientifically and spiritually proven that the body and mind responds to tones frequencies and words and at sometimes involuntarily. Music is never merely entertainment, the body, mind and nature automatically doesn’t allow it to be so. That’s all I have to say on the matter, with enough knowledge we can piece it together.

  10. Please. Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne (remember his MTV show) was doing this ‘demonic’ stuff decades before this bleached-out face clown. They have no central underlying philosophy, so its just the same nihilism that’s been going on since Bounti and Beenie back in the ’90s. These guys are just using demonic imagery for shock effect.

Ad what the hell is this crap about music ‘reflexively’ making you do shit, or ‘music reflecting society.’ The whole idea of a half a century of Jamaican music was to make you think rationally about the society we lived in , and how to change. Just listen to Peter Tosh, pre-722 Bob, Bob Andy, Burning Spear etc.

I disagree. they said the same thing in the 60s when that generation was smoking pot and using acid and other drugs freely and the music was far worst than this. They said the same thing in the 70s when they thought the youths were too radical, they said the same thing in the 80s when crack was wack. This too shall pass. Every generation go through these things, things change but yet stays the same. real life.

      November 12, 2012 at 12:39 am

  14. We need to stand up and scream that this music is destroying the minds of our young. The evidence is clear – there is a sinister scourge over the land of Jamaica as this music activates chaos. We at RedTones Productions has taken a stand. We will not only produce services and products that are wholesome to the family but we are making a direct statement that Jamaica must “STOP PREACH DEMON” and our very own Claudius England has come out charging against it in his “Stop Preach Demon” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H9efX28O4E&feature=share – take a listen and share the word. New or not, entertainment or message – we stand rooted in our declaration that “Enough is enough”. Blessings.

they said the same thing about Rap when it first came out. Rap was very violent and gritty back in the 80s

      November 12, 2012 at 12:42 am

  15. LiberalElite

There are many things in our society that are destructive. Where have you been? Hip Hop and Reality TV are far more destructive to the youths than Tommy Lee music. Why pick on Tommy Lee? he’s an artist tapping into an art form that some people like. There are so many options in music, so if you don’t like his music don’t listen or turn the station…plain and simple. I’m so sick and tired of judgemental people acting like they holier than thou. Stop whining and write about something constructive and uplifting. You’re just a provacatuer trying to capitalize on Tommy Lee art. I love Tommy Lee, love his art, love his range. Find your own 15 minutes and stop trying to tear Tommy Lee down by planting seeds…the world is a big enough place for everyone, let the young man use him talent the way he chooses…you just mad because you neva bus and he did.

  16. LiberalElite

Remember Hard Rock in the 70s and Gangster Rap in the 80s? Well, I do and the music back then were far more violent, gritty and self destructive but people survived. Music is an art and evolves in each generation. this is much ado about nothing. This too shall pass and you all will be complaining about the next thing.

Thank you for the article. It was interesting to read about it in a different perspective.

I’m from Germany, have never been to Jamaica and just can comment on that from the objective perspective.
Music is art and it can even use extreme symbols to reach a certain audience.
I always understood Dancehall as something provocative and violent. That’s why I like Dancehall – it was always fresh and new, dealing with topics German artists would never sing about.
Especially the explicit lyrics about violence and sex would be quite controversial in German music industry.

That’s why I cannot understand why Tommy Lee should be more dangerous with his lyrics singing about Demons. In Japanese Heavy Metal music industry it is normal to sing about symbols like being possesed or bad spirits and demons.
That’s why I consider this as a cultural difference. I cannot see anything bad in Tommy Lee’s songs, since he is an talented artist and his lyrics are just different from what other Dancehall artists have sung about before. Aslong as you understand music as a form of art and you learned how to deal with media, you can also teach that to your own children. Eventually they will also become aware of it and they will know, how to understand the music – as entertainment.

I see nothin wrong with tommy lee’s music I love all his songs and his demonic style is just how he makes money. If I was an entertainer and i get money by acting like a demon I would do it.

No, I do not believe tommy Lee is a devil worshipper..as you stated music is art, in any way shape or fashion. that’s why there are SOOO many different types of music out there. If you don’t like the music don’t listen, for example I do not like country music so I will not listen. I love tommy Lee for the simple fact that he is different and doesn’t gaf…. I love his voice andd his riddems dem bad to me. Music is a form of art. Just because in a few songs he may get more into detail about certain things that many artist have already spoke about in their music does not mean anything. A lot of artists just men tune on whatever, it doesn’t mean that’s its going on in their life & such… I am nowhere near a devil worshipper and I am a big fan of him. He have good tunes as well that have got me thru some tough times such as Holding Out The Pressure & We Want Paper. Some west Indians need to stop being so stiff necked & realize this is the world.we live in free speech. If that is how he choose to represent his alter ego then so be it.. Look at Nicki minaj with her alter ego of romans which she used to do weird things with as well… Unna need if stop judge and realize ah di worl wha wi ah live in. Ca half do tings wha tommy Lee ah discuss in him song nuff ah unna did a tink or even say .. So plse stop. If he’s goth IDC I love me some tommy leee mmmmmmmmmm

Well to me the guy on the point(Sparta) is just being creative and trying to make big money no matter what it could cost him or what way he would use to make money.
I would conclude by saying he does not know what he is doing and that does not qualify him as clean, he still belongs to the dark(demons)

  55. This music and the persona he displays are just that;characters. If you take the time to read his lyrics, you will see that it is all theater. And for those of you droning on and on about how evil he is, it is your responsibility to monitor what your children listen to. This is adult content for adults who understand ENTERTAINMENT. That is the bottom line.

In Jamaica, there are christians, rastafarians, atheist, and satanist among other religious and anti-religious groups. Myself and many others are intrigued, by the demonic energy surrounding life and death, and we crave the dark emotional mode provided to us, by the artist tommylee sparta, and others like him. I am not supportive of the violence and crime, by civilians and/or legislative officers, and I really believe music is used to motivate criminal acts. Tommy lee sparta helps me to keep focus, especially during the nights, and he does so with the very same music, you rebel against. I have never commited any crimes, I have been a brilliant student in all my studies. People must learn to marshal their thoughts, and act independently.
