The World Is Ending…Again
For whatever reason, human beings have always been preoccupied with the final judgement, doomsday, end of time, world’s end; whatever you wish to call it, we’ve always occupied ourselves with that moment. Now apparently, that long awaited moment is at hand. The date has been set (May 21, 2011) and the countdown is underway. The world is ending.
Or is it?
The last serious judgement day was January 1st, 2000. We should all remember the crazed rush to be in a place of worship. By all accounts, computers would crash, time would stop and that great trumpet would have sounded and we would have seen the Christ coming on the clouds of heaven, in all His glory. Needless to say that didn’t happen. And many of us now regret spending our New Year’s Eve in church that night.
Eleven years later, we are confronted with yet another day of final judgement, and if the Mayans are to be taken seriously, there is yet still another judgement on December 21 (?) 2012. We have far less information about this judgement than we did the last time. At least then we knew what was going to trigger it, the new millennium. This time it’s all hush hush. Top secret stuff. Very little details have been released by the “planning committee”, if you will.
Say what you want about Him, but Christ sure knows how to throw a homecoming. He just relishes that grand entrance.
Seriously though, these prophetic mishaps have contributed to the gross cynicism that christianity and it’s denominations face. Secular individuals and indeed atheists relish the miscalculations and missteps by those who propose, or rather, presume to know the mind of God. What scientific or mathematical equation was used to come to the exact date of God’s coming? Will He be here at midnight? Late morning? Noon? 11:11pm? Do we stay up and wait for the coming? Should we even sleep at all?
This is little more than another failed human attempt to understand God.
I often wonder why God would tell some people and not others. I also vaguely remember that God’s direct communication with man ended many centuries ago, so what is the truth? And why is it that some denominations are preaching this judgement day message and others aren’t? Christian denominations must come to the realization that the division which exists between them is not helping the quest to preach the gospel. In fact, it turns so many people away.
The cynics will always say religion is hypocritical and biased. Can we really blame them? What happens if we live to see May 22nd? How does it reflect on those who have so rigorously tried to instill the fear of God, if you will, in us? It makes a mockery of christianity. It really does.
I have a theory on why these dooms day prophecies are so important.
You see, unfortunately all this mass hysteria often leads to mass baptisms. Those who propose the end of the world surely feel accomplished when they gain “followers for Christ”. Yes, I believe this is just another attempt to gain followers through fear and manipulation.
And yes, I think that is fundamentally wrong, even contrary to the essence of what salvation should be.
Salvation should never be forced on people through fear and manipulation. Otherwise, we are baptizing for the sake of baptism and that can’t be enough. Surely a decision to accept Christ must be personal and meaningful. Otherwise, we’re believing not because we want to, but because we’ve been forced to. Then again, aren’t most “true christians” forced? Socialized to accept Christ? What would happen if we were born in the Middle East? Praise Allah perhaps? Perhaps.
Finally, I have a word of advice for all those who have been “behaving” in anticipation for the coming. Cut it out. I think you need to genuinely mean it for it to matter. And no, Yendi Phillipps will not be “hosting” judgement day nor will Oprah. I just hope there’s shade. I really don’t want to have to stand in the sun while the Chinese are being judged. Do you see the population over there? Not to mention the Indians. Saturday is gonna be a looooooooooooooooong day.
Or is it?
We’ll wait and see.
