Masturbation : Why Is It Taboo?‏

Gentlemen, sometimes we’re not even thinking about sex and we spring the casual erection; you know the kind you get when you’re in class and bored and out of no where you get hard? The kind you have to use your bag to cover as you move from class to class? Yeah, that kind. You might stroke it…once…twice…three times…

Ladies, picture it; you’ve just showered, you’re naked and there is a cool, gentle wind. It plays across your nipples and at that point the heat rises in you. Out of no where, thoughts of sex plague your mind. Your hand might roam south, detecting moistness, a finger finds it’s way inside…

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is masturbation.

The ancient art of bringing one’s self to climax by stimulating the sexual organs. This can be done with a partner, (mutual masturbation), or with yourself and some good porn. Some of us are gifted with extraordinary imaginations and therefore can conjure up elaborate narratives in our minds, usually involving someone we have no chance with in reality. (I sure know I have…wait, did I just suggest I masturbate? Well, no. I don’t. 🙂 )

This isn’t about me though.

Like oral sex, albeit not as severe, masturbation is considered taboo in our Jamaican culture. Young men who choose to engage in this are usually ostracised and ridiculed. Female masturbation is rarely even spoken about. I don’t think we believe females even do it. I’ve heard comments of “a nasty gyal dat”, clearly in our minds, girls don’t, or shouldn’t, masturbate. It’s a male sport, if you will. I’m slowly realizing that’s a myth though, as several of my female friends do actually masturbate. And love it, might I add.

I think that in our highly sexualized culture, where so much emphasis is placed on being a “gallis”, it is inconceivable that a guy would shun vagina and opt to bring himself to pleasure. How could he? We glorify sex and the more of it you’ve had, the higher your props. Could it be that because males are expected to be “man whores” and women are expected to be pure? decent? one man kind of girl?, it is expected that the decent young lady would never insert any foreign object in her vagina? And that’s what makes her nasty? While the man should be having actual sex so masturbation also makes him nasty? Am I making any sense? I’m not sure. It was just a fleeting thought. It must be because we expect everyone to be having sex why we consider masturbation taboo. Do you have any other reason why we might?

You know, there are even males who claim they have NEVER masturbated? Despite studies that show that all males, at one point or another, have in fact done so?

I think I’d be quicker in believing a girl who says she has never as opposed to a guy. I’m not sure why. Maybe I’m one of them who think it isn’t for girls.

And of course, we must discuss the dearly beloved christian faith.

The christian faith requires abstinence until marriage from all those who profess to be followers of Christ. (A task more than half fail at). Is this realistic though? In a world saturated by sex and desire, can a person be reasonably expected to abstain? And if they do, should they be barred from the one form of release available to them? Masturbation. I’ve actually read several conflicting positions on masturbation as it relates to the christian faith. I’ve read that it is indeed a sin because it causes lust and carnal desire, which is sinful. (rolls eyes) Isn’t ‘desire’ a normal human… emotion? And isn’t it unnatural to ask a human being to deny an innate feeling? On the other hand, I have read that masturbation is permissible as it eases the strain of abstinence. It is indeed a great theological debate. What says you? Do you think Christians should be allowed to masturbate?

Finally, I don’t see what’s so wrong with masturbation, if it’s done in moderation. (Studies show that an addiction to masturbation may cause a person to be unable to enjoy actual sex with someone else). Still, sex isn’t always available. For some, sex isn’t even an option. So why shouldn’t we masturbate?

I say back it, finger it, jack it, stroke it, stimulate it and love it! Masturbation ought not to be taboo.

  1. This is a really great post. And to be honest, I don’t see why people on a whole find some sexual activities so taboo. Take oral for example, if it feels good to you and you want your partner to feel good -Why give a rat’s tail about what anyone else has to say?
But all in all this was a great post. Definitely will recommend your blog.

    • Thankss a lot !! I think that’s just society trying to reach into people’s private lives and dictate what should happen there.

    I agree with Jherane!

Society has this double standard approach to stuff, esp the Jamaican society on the Male and female masturbation and esp on Oral sex. Where the ‘rules’ go for one set of persons and not for the others.

And on the church and masturbation, I don’t think there is substantial evidence to justify masturbation as a sin. And the justification that it is a sin (by Christians), is solely based on interpretation. The problem with Christians (I think) is that they fear what they do understand, so they are quick to jump on the “it’s a sin” wagon.

    Great post by the way!

    • Well, apparently there are scriptures that speak to “sexual immorality” and I’ve been told masturbation is one such example. IDK tho… and thankkk you Sir Michael.

Jamaicans are just stupid and uneducated. This goes well with the oral sex and pussy eatin article. We too quick fi judge everything. I don’t think masturbation is wrong. That’s people personal choice. How does dat affect us? When I was younger, I use to think that oral sex, masturbation n porn etc were all wrong. I guess I’m more open minded now but I don’t think anything is wrong with it. Masturbation has been around for yrs and everyone try it at least once. How cums this is not frowned upon in other society? There isnt a law that said masturbation is wrong. Idk I’m confused. We mek such a big deal outta everything. N u knw what Mr. Editor? Sumtimes I get confused with weh God really wan’t from us. I feel as if him want us to be perfect or sumn. Mi nuh think people can abstain from any form of sexual activity at all including Christians.

    • “What God want from us” is completely different from what we THINK/EXPECT God to wants from us! No-one (I believe) really knows what God wants from us -if anything at all. However, I’m not here to agree/disagree, rather bring about some form of mediation…that said, one cannot be blamed for what was learnt from infant stages, lifestyle traits most of us know now is what we’ve been taught growing up. Lastly, “how cums this is…” was the pun intended? ;D

      • So your saying attitudes towards masturbation are learnt and therefore hard to cast off when older?

        May 7, 2011 at 4:39 pm

    • LOL! I love when you call me “Mr. Editor” enuh Christina. LOL! But yeh..Jamaica is supposedly a christian and conservative country so we frown upon anything that is “deviant”. Of course, this is all hypocrisy. Thankss for reading as usual !!

Yes man Editor… Mi affi give yuh ur respect. N ur welcum.

On another note, America is a Christian and conservative country and these things are not frowned upon. Jamaicans just need fi grow up, get sum education and stop d stupidness. N ur soooo wrong. Jamaica nuh deh noweh near conservative. I think we are one of the most wild, barbaric, and uncivilized country.

  5. i dont know if the act is taboo or if people are just too coward to admit to doing and liking it. i think people just dont want to admit doing it. i think, people think being sexually curious is a bad thing and people are afraid to like sex. so rather than embrace the things that bring you pleasure sex is more of a chore or obligation to your partner.

  7. Christian

Masturbation is indeed a sin. And God does not wish for Christians to be perfect but to resist temptation and seek purity. After all, a saint is just a sinner who fell down, but got up. You can’t stay in sin, but repent and free yourself from its grasp.
Lust is definitely a sin and is quite easy to do. Why wouldn’t masturbation be a sin when it is so much more immoral than simply fantasizing?

    • Thank you for the ‘christian’ perspective. It’s always good to get varying opinions. That’s your truth. Kudos to you.

I don’t think masturbation is a sin. As far as I knw, the Bible did not discuss masturbation at all. Since it is a sexual act, maybe it should be done only in a marriage which is not even realistic.

I understand that if lust is involved, it is indeed a sin. But what if no lust or sexual fantasy is involved? Will this be considered a sin? I think sum things will be unknown and Christians will make their own assertions cuz the Bible did not condemn or condone masturbation.
