The Relationship, The Ex and Stuff

An “ex” is a very curious thing to have. Personally, I never know what to do with them or how to relate to them. This is puzzling, considering months, or years before, I had shared a life, my body and my “love” with this person. For some of us, that estranged ex was once the centre of our world, some of us may have even forsaken friends and family for that person. Some of us may even have excessively sweet stories to tell. Stories of intrigue and romance. That first smile, first kiss, first time the penis was made to know the vagina (or whatever variation of that meeting you may engage in).

From Oral to Anal : The Changing Sexual Culture in Jamaica

By now, we must have all heard of the types of sex that are to be had. There’s vaginal, oral, and though many Jamaicans would rather it not be said, there’s anal. Increasingly, the Jamaican population seems content with exploring all three aspects of sex. In fact, I’m surprised at how many of my friends are considering the taboos. That is, oral and anal sex. I don’t listen to the Raga show, but based on comments I’ve read and heard, it would appear that his callers, and someone told me these callers reflect the general society, are dishing out “batty washes” (the phenomenon of using one’s tongue to stimulate the anus), actively digesting semen, passionately sucking on penises and salivating at the thought of a wet vagina.

Murder and Mayhem : The X6 Culture

Since the brutal and senseless murder of young Khajeel Mais, I’ve been reading comments from various factions in the society. While there seems to have been a general expression of shock and disgust, I didn’t get the feeling that the murder had caused enough alarm. That is, I didn’t feel that our collective conscience had been offended as it should have been. Further, I didn’t feel that we understood that quite literally that could have been any of us. We could have been in that taxi and some materialistic psychopath could have ended our life.

Perhaps I shouldn’t try to make sense of what clearly is a senseless act, but I was so shocked and appalled that someone could act so recklessly and with such wanton disregard for life; I had to try to make sense of it. If I didn’t, I would have left myself to assume that Jamaica had fallen so deep into this murderous cycle that we were now just killing for sport. I had to find justification, anything else would be terrifying. So I decided to blame it on our materialistic culture.

Domestic Violence : “If Him Nuh Beat Mi Him Nuh Love Mi”

There are few things that disturb me more than hearing or seeing a grown woman being beaten by a man. This morning I was privy to one such situation. Besides hearing the actual slaps, and things crashing and smashing; the thing that disturbed me most was the still and quiet voice of the 3 year old boy pleading with his father, “stop hitting Mommy!”.

Dr. The Hon. Usain St. Leo Bolt O.D. O.J. ?

The Mona campus of the University of the West Indies has announced that it will honour world record holder, Usain Bolt, with an honorary doctorate in Laws. In a press release, the University cited Mr. Bolt’s “athletic prowess” and “contribution to regional advancement” as the reasons for the award. Perhaps predictably, members of the academic community, particularly students of Law, have condemned the move as outrageous and ill advised.

But what is an honorary degree? And what is it’s use, if any?

According to The Oxford University Press, an honorary degree, or a degree honoris causa (for the sake of the honour), is an academic degree granted by a university, after the institution has waived the normal requirements for the award of such a degree (registration, residence, examinations etc). This degree is normally granted in recognition of an individual’s contribution to a specific discipline or the society in general. The university usually derives benefits from it’s association with the individual in question. Keep the preceding sentence in mind as you read the rest of this post.

Transformers : An Action Packed Thrill Ride

“Quite literally the greatest action movie I’ve ever seen.”

Those were the words that escaped my lips as I rose to leave Cinema 3 at Carib 5 this afternoon. I had just seen the Michael Bay directed and Steven Spielberg produced “Transformers Dark of The Moon”, and my heart rate had barely began to stabilise. This is a movie that starts at awesome, takes a turn at amazing and drops you off at pure visual and cinematic brilliance. From the 3D graphics to the plot, from the humour to the heroism; Michael Bay delivers, in my opinion, the greatest action movie of his career.
